Diverse Crimes and Fraud Investigations

Fraud is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as the “intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another to part with something of value or to surrender a legal right.” Commonly, we read about prosecutions involving tax fraud, credit card fraud, wire fraud, charity fraud, and securities fraud. Money is the motive. The Federal Trade Commission claims fraud resulted in a loss of $8.8 billion in 2022. What’s more, consumers were the victims.

Businesses large and small are often victims of financial fraud. Unsurprisingly, internal and trusted sources are the culprits. In fact, methods of fraud include tampering with computerized accounting systems, basic book keeping or outright theft of monies from a safe, bank account or register till. Individual(s) often siphon small amounts of revenue from a business over time. Consequently, years may pass before the business see’s the loss.

Other instances of fraud begin on paper. Wills, legal papers, home and auto titles are open to forgery. Accordingly, known as a “forged instrument.” Basic handwriting analysis can identify writing style and penmanship differences between the legitimate signatory and the fraudulent signatory. Additionally, timelines, property value and persons of interest are important elements of the investigation.
